Ice Flowers

How to Make Ice Flowers

"ICE FLOWERS" When we were in lockdown I was keeping safe and sane. Try this at home, its fun and easy. All photographed hand held with on any mobile and edited in Snapseed on mobile. Alternatively you can try this with a proper camera and tripod but may need to do focus stacking.

A3 black sheet for background and natural window light. Switch angle of view straight (square) on or side (cube) on to choose required texture, form or shape emphasis.

Experiment with different sizes and shapes of natural objects to freeze. Try different shaped containers and vary the depth of water.

Try and use filtered and unfiltered water to see if there is a difference in the purity of the water. Also make sure to pour in the water in 3 stages to layer the weight of the water and to be able to position the object in an visually pleasing way. Start with a 1/4 (2 hours freeze) amount of water followed by another 1/4 (2 hour freeze) and then the remainder to fill up. You can also experiment by pouring all of the water in one go.

If you wish to get less bubbles in your ice block, I would suggest you boil filtered water 1-2 times and wait for it to cool before you fill your trays.

I have a small ice cooler I used to experiment with the “Directional Freezing” method (top/Down) and here are the results. I need to pour in stages to position my flower pieces for next time, but viola I am please with the clear ice outcome for future projects. Just need to find space in the freezer and not annoy my wife with using too much space. Advanced Method: Only possible if you have a cooler and large freezer.
